Everywhere you look there are new brands coming up with new skincare lines, each promising to make you look younger and never get a pimple again! I have been trying out several new Indian beauty brands to see which one actually delivers, but one ingredient and one Indian beauty brand that has stood out to me is Retinol, and the Derma Co. Here I will document some of my skin care tips, in particular the need for a good retinol cream in your tool box.
I have found some more great skincare brands (which I will write about later) but just using Derma Co.’s 0.1% Retinol Face Serum has truly done great things for me. My skin is super sensitive and due to my autoimmune thyroid, I have sought out many dermatologists over the years. When I had a bad bout of acne in my younger years, they prescribed Isotretinoin tablets. These are super strong and can really dry out your skin, one of the main reasons I started to wean myself off of them.
Isotretinoin and retinol are both from the same family (retinoids/retinols) – Vitamin A. The difference however, is in their strength. While retinoids (like in my tablets) is much stronger and needs to be taken with caution, retinol is a more mild formulation that can do wonders for your skin.
Some of the many benefits of using retinol include:
• reducing skin aging (as retinol increases skin cell turnover)
• even skin tone ( if you use it often and over time it helps fade any spots of hyperpigmentation)
• acne fighting (retinol decreases the function of overactive oil glands and helps clear up your pores)
• boosts collagen production (this is what helps us fight wrinkles and other signs of aging skin)
However, even a mild formulation can lead to dryness of the skin so it is advisable to only use your retinol anti-aging cream once or twice a week to start with, increasing the frequency over time and post seeing how your skin responds.
Most doctors advise using this cream/serum at night for the best results- and allowing it to take its time by using it consistently for at least 6 weeks to see a result. For me, this Derma Co. serum helped me see results quite quickly, beating the acne that was coming up due to that time of the month. If you are pregnant, however, it is advisable to not use retinol, as even though it is mild it can have side effects. A good substitute for pregnant women is bakuchiol. It has many of the benefits of retinol but is pregnancy safe while it helps fight aging.
If you’re looking to take care of your skin or prevent signs of aging skin (even if you’re young) my beauty tips include investing in a good retinol cream.
Which ones have you tried? Have they worked well? Let me know in the com
