2022 is upon us and this year I want to do a retrospective on everything I watched, loved, hated, enjoyed and got confused by in 2021. Every year I document all the films I watch on Cinetrak, which is quite the handy app. It helps me keep track of movies that I can later look back on and play the film critic. However, this year and with this blog, I want to highlight my best and worst films I saw in 2021. I wish I could do a movie review of each one, but alas no time (also I forgot the story of a few!)
Without further ado here is the entire list:

This year I actively set out to watch more movies rather than TV shows and I managed to watch about a 100 more than I did in 2020. I spent a large amount of my time watching horror films (a genre I find soothing and also which hardly has commendable scary films, although some turned out pretty funny!), animation films (i’d never seen a lot of popular choices) and disaster movies centered around water and sharks (tsunamis and megaladon fascinate me.)
While I re-watched some old favourites like Space Jam, Gone with the Wind and 13 Going on 30, out of the 228 movies I watched this year, 207 were first time viewings. I do need to vary up my foreign film viewings though with the majority of films being from the US (last year a massive amount of the films I watched were Bollywood, this year not a one), but mood swings tend to dictate how I watch films.
MY WORST FILMS OF 2021
Without further ado, these were the WORST movies I watched this year (scoring a 2/3/4 rating – it takes a lot for me to give such a low rating. Even with mediocre but time pass movies I usually give them a 5 or 6, so these to me stank more than a blue cheese sundae.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged: It took me a beat to remember this one. In keeping with my love for all things sharks, I watched this post watching 47 Meters Down. Unlike its predecessor, this movie tries to create suspense and jump scares but to little or no avail. SPOILER:There is a pretty hilarious bit where John Corbett gets mauled by a shark, but other than that meh. The main theme of the movie is sisterhood or something. If it takes a shark to make your step-sibling be nice to you, well why would you even try?
THE TROPES: SHARKS /FINAL GIRL
- All Hallow’s Eve: This movie looked so much older than it is. The ending was pretty cool and the clown is freakish, but other than that this was more gore over glory.
THE TROPES: CLOWNS/ BLOOD AND GORE
- Game of Death: Or as I like to call it Jumanji for Jack-asses. Centering around a game that you have to play or die, this movie has some pretty random head exploding scenes and some questionable incest.
THE TROPES : BLOOD AND GORE/ UNNECESSARY LOVE STORY
- Killer Under the Bed: A creepy voodoo doll causing mayhem- a lot more hilarious to watch onscreen have to say. Almost bordering on bad comedy, this movie wins some points for starring the OG Buffy Kristy Swanson.
THE TROPES : CRAZY DOLL/ SEX CRAVED TEACHER
- Ouija: I genuinely don’t even remember this movie so I’m guessing it sucked. This isn’t the Mike Flanagan one, that guy is awesome. The lack of a film review for this is probably due to its lack of story.
- Silent Night: So I think this was supposed to be an intellectual dark comedy about the end of the world (haha cos Covid) but it was just a slow-burning collection of pretty people in an English manor without offering much humour, fear or anything really. The cinematic equivalent of an English cup of tea for people who would rather have chai.
THE TROPES : CREEPY MANOR/ END OF THE WORLD
- Taking Lives: An old school Angelina Jolie crime thriller, this movie is like a paperback you pick up at an airport and finish in one flight, and go on to forget a week from then. It may have been based on one of those. Oh yep, Wikipedia says it is. Should have starred Morgan Freeman but doesn’t.
THE TROPES: SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY/FALSE POSITIVE
- The Boy Next Door: Another one of those they slept together once and now he’s obsessed with her (she’s obsessed with him) and will destroy his (or her) life movies, this one stars Jennifer Lopez and shows a lot of skin. My film review- pass unless you wanna see J.Lo ass.
THE TROPES: SOFT PORN REVENGE FILM/STUDENT TEACHER
- The Emoji Movie: One thing I learned this year in my quest to give animation a chance, it’s very hard to find an all out bad animated movie. Animated films usually have a lot of laughs and heart, and some unexpectedly moving moments. This movie had none. Lesson: don’t make movies about apps and games and icons on phones.
MY ONE WORD FILM REVIEW: POOP
- The New Mutants: One of the first movies I saw in 2021. This is the kind of movie that leads to people not wanting to make more X-men universe related movies.
THE TROPES: A motley crew assortment of TV teens (Arya Stark, Emo kid from Stranger Things, The Queen’s Gambit girl)
- There’s Someone Inside your House: I am glad Netflix is trying to bring scary back and while Fear Street was amazing (petition for the TV series now!) this movie fell flat. Tedious, and with paper thin characters, this was a how not to for slasher films.
THE TROPES : FINAL GIRL/ RICH PSYCHO/ NETFLIX REVIEWS
And now on to the crème de la crème of utter poop movies, rating 3 and 2 respectively on the Meetali-Misty Meter
- Are You Scared?: Another horror movie that mixes games and Saw like shenanigary, this movie involves a bunch of who really cares characters stuck in a deadly game where they all keep dying and where the big question is “Are you scared?” (I would be if I had signed my career away by starring in this)
THE TROPES : DEATH GAMES
And our unlucky number 13 aka the worst film I saw in 2021 is this Mexican disasterpiece:
- The Mark of the Devil: This movie was some clusterfuck of demons, exorcisms, and evil/good priests. All I remember about it was wanting it to be over.
THE TROPES : EXORCISMS/ POSSESSED DAUGHTER
Now moving on to my best movies 2021 (not counting rewatches because some movies are going to remain my forever favourites), here they are:
- Deadpool 2: This was the year I finally got around to watching Ryan Reynold’s take on Deadpool (post whatever the hell happened to him in X-Men’s Origins: Wolverine). This one ranked higher to me, even though it’s a sequel, because of the loss of his paramour and the ensuing trauma he endures because of it. Additionally, Cable makes this movie a much stronger outing than the first one and a little time travel never hurt nobody. The end credits scene is also solid.
THE TROPES : WISECRACKING ANTIHERO/ TIME TRAVEL
- Shrek Forever After: While this is no cinematic masterpiece, given that I watched so many animated films this year, a few of them scored quite highly. As the fourth in the series, I actually found it a strong entry ( also I seem to like sequels, sue me). It was nice seeing Shrek go through his very own It’s a Wonderful Life crisis and the build up for Shrek and Fiona falling in love just seemed much stronger in this film.
THE TROPES : RUMPLESTILTSKIN/ RETOLD FAIRY TALES
- Kung Fu Panda 3: Yes, yes another sequel. This film lets Po get in touch with his roots and meet his birth father for the first time. This leads to some cute two dad’s banter and many, many cute and squishy panda scenes. The message of this film is wonderful as well, and the whole film is packed with cute scenes and some truly funny jokes. This film also gave me some massive dimsum and ramen cravings, the latter which I satisfied with a bowl from Delhi’s own Ramen Donn.
THE TROPES : BE TRUE TO YOURSELF/ MY TWO DADS
- The Mitchells vs The Machines: This was an unexpectedly great film with a lot of heart, humour, technology disses and a dog (or was he bread?) Thoroughly entertaining and well-written, this is a movie I am sure to rewatch.
THE TROPES : LESBIAN LEAD WE LOVE / CUTE SIDEKICK
- Fear Street 1978 + 1666: The most successful of the Netflix movies of 2021, in my opinion. While the first of the trilogy didn’t make it to my toppermost of the poppermost, the sequels did (go figure!). 1978 is a perfect throwback to camp slasher films and Sadie Sink has to be my favourite of the whole series- she livens up anything she’s in! 1666 was the perfect conclusion going from past to present and giving us an origin story that I lived for! Barring the wonky accents, I hope this leads to the much needed TV series spin off.
THE TROPES : LESBIAN LEAD WE LOVE/ FIERY REDHEAD / NETFLIX REVIEWS
ODDBALL PAIRINGS ARE MY FAVE
- Plus One: The only romcom in my top movies watched (I’m as surprised as you are) this film largely works because of the leads- a very cute Jack Quaid and the wry Maya Erskine. While you know where the movie will lead, it earns points for its humour, warmth and realism.
THE TROPES : WEDDING DATE NEEDED/ DRUNKEN HOOK UP
- The Beatles: Get Back: Thank you Peter Jackson for the gift that is this documentary! Painfully and perfectly remastered, this documentary makes you feel like The Beatles are in the room with you. The most special part is just seeing how these legends came up with some of the most renowned songs in the world, their banter and just the privilege of getting to know more about the Fab Four.
BEATLES TROPES: PAUL IS BOSSY/ YOKO BROKE UP THE BAND
- Spider-man: No Way Home: This was my favourite fictional movie of the year. Yes, I am biased because I saw it towards the end of the year and Spider-man is my fave superhero, but just the sheer amount of negotiations that had to go into making something of this scale is impressive. While the script may not be the tightest , and yes, a large amount is fan service, the fact remains this movie made A LOT of things happen that no one could’ve conceived years ago and remained entertaining and funny for the most part as well as bringing tears to your eyes.
THE TROPES : ALL AROUND ME ARE FAMILIAR FACES/ SELECTIVE AMNESIA
A few other films that stood out to me for interesting/ good reasons this year but that I am running out of space (or probably readers to detail ) are: A Simple Favor, Vivarium, Big Hero 6, Freaky, Free Guy, I Care a Lot, Malignant, Murder by Death, Palm Springs, The Final Girls, The Platform, The Wave & Trading Places.
If you have any suggestions/recommendations, or just want to know more about the tropes I’ve outlined, comment or drop me a message.
